From Spray Bottles to Suds: Simple Swaps for a Healthier Home
Spring is the Time for Cleaning... and Switching to Healthier Habits
A few years ago, I started doing that thing we all say we’ll do next spring: clean smarter. I was tired of the strong-smelling sprays and mystery ingredients, so I made a switch to more natural cleaners in our home. And let me tell you—I haven’t looked back.
Now, instead of filling my cleaning bucket with store-bought bottles that make me feel like I need to open all the windows (in February), I grab my trusty little spray bottle filled with my favorite lemon-scented magic potion.
🍋 DIY Lemon All-Purpose Cleaner
This one is my go-to for pretty much everything. Floors, counters, bathroom sinks, even the occasional carpet spill (hello, teenager with salsa).
Here’s what you’ll need:
1 ½ cups distilled water (tap works too, but I like to be fancy)
½ cup white vinegar
10 drops lemon essential oil 🍋
To make it:
Mix everything together and pour into a spray bottle. Give it a good shake before each use, especially if it’s been sitting under the sink for a while.
Pro tip: Always spot test on new surfaces—just in case your countertops are fancier than mine.
The Best Budget-Friendly Chemical-Free Hand Soap
I searched forever for a natural hand soap that wouldn’t dry out my skin or cost a small fortune. Most of the natural brands at the store were either too expensive or left goopy soap blobs all over the sink (you know what I’m talking about).
This recipe is thin, gentle, and still gives a great lather. Bonus: it smells clean and fresh, and it won’t wreck your wallet.
Here’s what you need:
¾ cup distilled water
¼ cup liquid Castile soap (unscented or your favorite scent)
Mix it all together and pour into a soap dispenser. That’s it! You can jazz it up with a few drops of essential oil if you’d like—lavender, peppermint, citrus—whatever makes your kitchen or bathroom smell like a spa instead of a science lab.
Why I Love Going Natural
These swaps are simple, but they’ve made a big difference in how my home feels—and how I feel in my home. It’s not about being perfect, but every small step adds up.
So, if you’re in spring-cleaning mode and looking to make some low-effort, high-impact changes… these two recipes are a great place to start.
Because natural cleaning doesn’t have to be hard or expensive—and it can definitely still be fun.
